SEASONINGS - CULINARY HERBS ARE MEDICINES; RADISH SYRUP
Black or Spanish Radish (Raphanus sativus) The black or Spanish radish is the best possible liver medicine you can have right in your home. But you should not eat too much of it, or else it will be harmful. Taken frequently in small quantities, it can help liver patients to prevent bilious colic and many kinds of digestive problems.
Finely grated radish, sprinkled with raw cane sugar in order to make a syrup, provides a good medicine for chronic bronchial catarrh. To save on the amount of sugar used, first press the grated radish through muslin and then add sufficient sugar to form a thick syrup. Made in this way it should keep for weeks and you can take some every day. This is also an inexpensive and reliable help in the treatment of persistent whooping cough. For those who do not want to take the time to make the syrup, or who are unable to obtain black radishes, radish syrup prepared in much the same way can be bought.
In cases of gallbladder trouble, ten drops of raw radish essence (Raphanus-Perkolat) in a tablespoon of water, taken three times a day, are sufficient to give relief. You may use this radish essence for whooping cough and bronchial catarrh in conjunction with the syrup. Add ten drops to a glass of water, sweeten with honey and sip throughout the day.
